Abstract
Suicide is currently the ninth most common cause of death in the United States, although it is third for adolescents and second for young adults.12 There are approximately 30,000 suicides in the United States each year with 200,000 family survivors.3–5 The true incidence may be higher because an unknown number of “accidental” deaths and noncompliance with medical treatments may represent undiagnosed suicides.6
