Abstract

The endocrine system regulates the metabolic activities of the body and affects the functions of many organ systems. It is important to consider an endocrine disorder in most clinical situations, especially when a patient presents with vague multisystem complaints. The endocrine system is regulated by the complex interactions of the central nervous system (CNS), the pituitary, and the target gland, organ, or tissue. Knowledge of these interactions aids in determining the etiology of endocrine disease, understanding the clinical presentation, initiating a diagnostic evaluation, and instituting appropriate therapy.
