Abstract

During the second half of the twentieth century American medicine has developed a heightened awareness that a wide variety of mental disorders may influence individual and family well-being. The 1978 President’s Commission on Mental Health predicted that one in every seven Americans would, at some period in their lifetimes, require professional help to deal with emotional disturbances.1 The 1978 estimated incidence of maladaptive behavior in the United States included 53 million individuals with mild to moderate depression, ten million reporting alcohol-related problems, six million children and teenagers considered to be emotionally disturbed, and one million students who withdrew from college for primarily emotional problems.2
