Abstract
Primary care physicians have for years heard that it is important to take the family into consideration in treating patients. However, only recently have we become aware of the ways in which family dynamics and structure influence the initiation and the course of illness within a family member. The intent of this chapter is to describe some of the ways that illness modifies, and is modified by, the family structure of the patient.
