Abstract

In preparing a physician for the practice of family medicine, training and experience in surgery and some of its subspecialties is important for completeness. Many family physicians do not expect to perform operating room or office surgery, but would benefit from exposure to clinical surgery because it is more than just a technical therapeutic modality. Certain data-handling and problem-solving skills are necessary for all physicians who treat patients of all ages and with any organ system problem. Additionally, as the patient’s advocate, a personal physician who has knowledge pertaining to surgical therapy can help in counselling the patient about risks and outcome. The family physician can be of immense help to both patient and family in easing the impact of major surgery on the individuals involved. Another function of the family physician is a selective and evaluative one; he has the responsibility to assure that optimum care is provided by the surgeon who receives the referral. Concurrent care for continuing medical problems also need to be managed. A good working relationship between family physician and consultants needs to be developed and nurtured.
