Abstract
Not only is respiratory disease encountered in family practice with considerable frequency, but it can also represent a vast spectrum of severity ranging from such entities as self-limited acute bronchitis to devastating lung cancer or gram-negative pneumonia. In all circumstances, the family physician must approach the patient with the assumption of being the primary responsible physician. He/she is the one member of the medical establishment to whom this patient can consistently and easily relate, and from whom reassurance and alleviation of anxiety, or simply complete honest information, may be expected.
