Abstract

Each developmental stage of the family life cycle offers an opportunity for growth. Although the most dramatic effects may be experienced with the first pregnancy, each subsequent event creates a new social system. Pregnancy is not an isolated biologic event but includes the transformation of a wife to a mother and a husband to a father, each with a new identity and role.
