Abstract
The family physician is a sports physician by virtue of his specialty. He frequently examines young people who wish to be certified as physically fit for team sports in their schools. Many of his young patients participate in informal or sometimes in highly structured sports outside of schools, from the corner lot to the local year-round ice-skating rink. Adults who run daily, play racquetball or tennis in the evening or softball on weekends, or ski for 2 weeks each season are among his daily patient load. Often his office patients present with sprains, contusions, limps, and effusions.
