Elder Abuse

  • Lorne A. Becker

Child abuse has been the object of much research and interest since the 1960s, but it is only during the past few years that similar attention has been directed to the problem of abuse of the elderly by their family members. Elder abuse has undoubtedly been present for years, but its prevalence is thought to be rising in recent years as the geriatric population increases. The number of reported cases of abuse do not reveal the extent of the problem, as it is estimated that only about one case in six is reported.
