The term “medical ethics” has come to mean so many things during the past decade or so that one may wonder if it means anything in particular. The work of social scientists, legal experts, historians of medicine, behavioral scientists, and all else in medical practice and medical education that is not clearly clinical, is placed into one category and referred to by this catchall term. However, medical ethics is only one of a growing number of areas of nonclinical expertise that are perhaps most accurately included in the general category of “social sciences and humanities in medicine.”
