Abstract
Management of the patient with cancer constitutes an extremely challenging and difficult problem. The concept of cancer evokes strong emotional responses in the patient, the patient’s family, and even the physician. Decisions must be made about treatment of the tumor and control of the associated complications. Maximum success can only be achieved when the health care team works in harmony with the patient and the patient’s family. This chapter is concerned with the vital role of the family physician in the broad area of medical oncology. Other disciplines such as radiation oncology and surgical oncology are only considered in their relationship to the medical management of the cancer patient.
