Abstract
The American Board of Family Practice (ABFP) was born many years before it was officially recognized in February 1969 as the 20th primary medical specialty. There are chronologically recapitulated elsewhere in this text (Chapter 2) some of the events that led up to the recognition of family practice as a specialty; however, the history becomes a fascinating saga of travails and tribulations when one is presented with some of the intrigue behind the scenes in an effort to gain formal recognition of such a major movement.
