Abstract
This chapter specifically addresses uterine bleeding due to alterations in the normal cyclical hormonal stimulation of the endometrium. This type of bleeding is commonly referred to as dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB).1–4 Clinically, DUB indicates ovulatory dysfunction. By definition, DUB excludes postmenopausal bleeding or bleeding due to the presence of specific pathologic processes such as inflammation, polyps, hyperplasia, carcinoma, exogenous hormones, and complications of pregnancy. The endometrial changes associated with DUB are important to recognize, because they may be confused with more serious lesions such as hyperplasia.
