Bronchial and Transbronchial Diseases

The disorders that are discussed in this chapter include aspiration, abscess, bronchostenosis, bronchial mucocele, bronchorrhea, bronchiectasis, broncholithiasis, bronchial fistulae, cystic fibrosis in adults, obstruction, bronchiolitis obliterans, BOOP, diffuse panbronchiolitis, atelectasis, organizing pneumonia, gangrene, and torsion. Disorders of bronchia often overlap with similar involvements in the trachea, and tracheobronchomalacia (polychondritis), tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica, and tracheobronchial amyloid are discussed in Chapter 22, Metabolic Diseases. Tumors of the trachea overlap somewhat with mainstem bronchi and are discussed in Chapter 32, Common Neoplasms in Chapter 33, Uncommon Tumors and even in endobronchial metastases in Chapter 35. Other bronchial wall and luminal diseases such as asthma, mucoid impaction, or bronchocentric granulomatosis are discussed in Chapter 16, Eosinophilic Infiltrates. The pediatric counterparts of all these and some unique bronchial and transbronchial disorders in younger patients are discussedin Chapter 7, Congenital and Developmental Diseases and in Chapter 8, Acquired Neonatal and Pediatric Diseases. Ciliary dyskinesia is covered with anatomy in Chapter 2. Infections such as viral-induced bronchiolitis are discussed in their respective areas. The bronchial effects of tobacco are discussed in Chapter 25, Tobacco Injury and in Chapter 26, Emphysema and Small and Large Airways Diseases. Dust effects are covered in Chapters 27 and 28. The conducting airways are also considered in Chapter 2, Anatomy; Chapter 3, Lung Defenses; Chapter 4, Common Pathways and Patterns of Injury; and Chapter 19, Sarcoid.
