Implantable Devices for Cardiac Pacing and Defibrillation
Chapter
Abstract
This chapter introduces the basic concepts of implantable pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). We discuss indications and management of patients with implantable devices. The purpose of this discussion is not to provide a comprehensive review of pacemakers and ICDs but rather to provide a knowledge base for systematic evaluation for possible device malfunctions as well as issues relevant in an ICU setting.
