Abstract
Ethical issues are common in critical care. The high degree of urgency present in managing extremely ill patients, the often sudden onset of their illness, the frequent lack of decisionmaking capacity of patients who are critically ill, and, for many critically ill patients, the status of being near death all contribute to ethical questions about appropriateness of therapy.
