The Network as a System

  • Robert Cole

This chapter is concerned with a packet switched network as a system. To provide efficient management of the communications hardware a packet switched network can be viewed as a resource management system. The user requirements of access and throughput are obtained by management of network resources such as buffer space and bandwidth. The expanding topic of network interconnection is briefly introduced.
