Abstract
A wide variety of benign diseases, from rare infections to commonplace polyps, occur in the endometrium. Furthermore, since the uterus is a target organ for hormonal stimulation, morphologic changes involving the endometrium may reflect disorders in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and the effects of exogenous hormone medications. The histological alterations are typically manifested by abnormal uterine bleeding, and an endometrial biopsy or curettage is commonly performed to determine its cause and to control excessive bleeding. The endometrial biopsyalso continues to be an important and integral part of the infertility work-up. Consequently, it is necessary to be aware of the wide variety of benign diseases as well as hyperplasia and carcinoma that may affect the endometrium. This chapter considers various benign, congenital, and acquired conditions involving the uterine corpus. For a more comprehensive discussion of the interpretation of these various diseases in endometrial biopsies and curettings, the reader is directed to a text that specifically addresses these issues.146.
