Abstract

Cystoid macular edema (CME) remains a significant cause of decreased visual acuity following cataract extraction. Fluorescein angiographically proven cystoid macular edema is reported to occur in greater than 50% of patients, causing decreased visual acuity in approximately 8% of cases (1–6). At the Wilmer Institute we are in the process of re-examining our incidence of cystoid macular edema following extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of a posterior chamber lens implant. We are also attempting to determine whether eyes undergoing primary capsulotomy are more likely to develop clinically significant CME.
