Abstract

Closed vitrectomy techniques have been useful in managing many complications of intraocular lens implantation. Over the past few years we have managed a consecutive series of 74 cases in which complications of intraocular lens implantation represented indications for subsequent closed vitreous surgery (Table 1). This report will discuss the anatomical and visual results and the complications observed in 48 consecutive cases unassociated with retinal detachment, macular pucker, or massive proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Follow-up information was obtained a minimum of six months following surgery. It should be noted that this series does not include cases of infectious endophthalmitis, but during the same time period that this series was obtained, 28 cases of culture proven pseudophakic endophthalmitis were diagnosed and managed at our institution by J. James Rowsey, M.D. (personal communication-July 1984), and these will not be discussed in this presentation.
