Abstract

The final phase of the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars is characterized by rapid changes in the structure and properties of the star and its circumstellar envelope (CSE); see Chapter 2. While it ascends the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB), its luminosity rises to values several thousand times that during core-hydrogen burning. Thermal pulses result in substantial variations in luminosity that lead to drastic changes in the chemical composition of the envelope. Pulsations and radiation pressure on dust cause a dense stellar wind of variable strength, obscuring the object from view at short wavelengths; see Chapters 4 and 6. At the tip of the AGB, mass-loss rates have risen to such high values that this essentially removes the hydrogen-rich stellar envelope on timescales of about 104 years, thus effectively terminating the AGB phase; see Chapter 7. The central star subsequently evolves to higher temperatures on a timescale that depends on mass (and may be as short as several 100 years), while layers close to its core become exposed. At the same time, the ejected CSE slowly expands and cools, revealing the central star. The interplay between the AGB CSE-remnant, the ensuing fast, tenuous stellar wind from the central star, and its hardening radiation field result in a fascinating spectacle of shaping of the ejected material and of processing of its composition: A planetary nebula (PN) is born.
