Children Who are Both Bullies and Victims

  • Gayle L. Macklem

When children who bully others are studied, two groups of bullies emerge. One group can be thought of as socially skilled and the other group socially unskilled. The unskilled group is described as children who both bully others and are victimized by others (Kaukiainen et al., 2002). This unskilled group, which constitute one in five children who are victimized, are described as provoking the teasing and bullying behaviors which they then must endure. The bully-victims can be confrontational with both children and adults. They appear to instigate abuse from peers. They then turn around and bully children who are even less competent than they may be.
