Until recently, very few scientists have directly or indirectly focused on the consequences of habitat fragmentation on sociality and behavior of vertebrates. Yahner and Mahan (1997) state that there are at least two challenges facing researchers in this area: 1) it is difficult to extend interpretations of behavioral phenomena obtained from individual animals or groups in a localized area to the broader landscape level; and 2) it will be problematic to invoke causal relationships between behavioral phenomena. Understanding the effects of fragmentation on behavior is especially difficult when no other study species remain in similar intact landscapes for comparison (Yahner and Mahan, 1997). Authors in this section discuss one to several groups or species of primates interacting within fragments.
