Critical Initial Imperfection (II)

Abstract

The critical load of a structural system undergoing bifurcation is highly sensitive to initial imperfections. In the design of such a system, it is preferable to consider the “worst” or, in other words, the “most detrimental” imperfection that reduces the critical load most rapidly. Such a worst imperfection has been formulated in Chapter 4 for simple critical points. Since multiple critical points appear generically for symmetric structures, such as domes and shell structures, the worst imperfection of a multiple critical point has drawn keen engineering interest.
