Procedural Techniques and Materials: Tumors and Osteoporotic Fractures
Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) is a relatively new procedure that has unique requirements for image guidance, patient preparation, and material selection and utilization. The fast acceptance of PV has driven many changes in the materials now available and in the planned developments to come. This chapter is devoted to the specific requirements that are necessary to the safe and successful performance of PV in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). Many of these issues are the same for PV performed for the treatment of neoplastic disease. Appendix I (Standard for the Performance of Percutaneous Vertebroplasty by the American College of Radiology) provides additional specifications.
