Noncommutative Fluid Mechanics

Abstract

A focus of recent research is the suggestion that spatial coordinates need not commute. Models have been constructed that incorporate this, within both particle and field physics. The present attention to this idea derives from string theory but, in fact, a more immediately appreciated physical setting is available: motion in a strong, external magnetic field. In particular, a charged fluid interacting with such a field exhibits noncommutative features, which we discuss in this chapter. But first we show how the noncommutativity of particle coordinates (as opposed to fields) manifests itself in an analogous magnetic system.
