Improving Provider Performance: An Integrated Approach and Case Study on Privileging and Credentialing
The Military Health System (MHS) has long endured the cumbersome and time-consuming task of maintaining different processes and systems for the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. Before the start of the project discussed in this chapter, there was no one system that could be accessed to indicate that a provider was credentialed and list his or her exact privileges. This lack of integration caused significant inconveniences for all involved. If an Army physician were to walk across the street to a Naval facility, the staff would have no idea who he or she was, and the subsequent application process for credentialing and privileging would sometimes take weeks.
