Abstract

In the past decade, statistics has changed from a tool used in specialized areas of research and development into an important component of business, industry, and government. There are few major businesses that do not collect data and use the information in those data for management and improvement of operations. Industries are increasingly relying on statistical quality control to optimize production and on statistically designed studies to develop better products and more efficient operating methods. Government departments are collecting ever greater amounts of statistical information to allow trends and changes to be monitored.
