Abstract
The semiconductor industry has been growing at an unprecedented rate since its start in the early 1960s. It capitalized on the outstanding properties of silicon and its stable oxide, which allowed the advent of the CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) process, the leading process for the whole semiconductor industry. An average growth of 15 to 16% per year in semiconductor sales imposes formidable challenges in terms of the huge investments needed for manufacturing.
