Tests of Achievement and Aptitude
The General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB) is a group of tests that are used to measure nine aptitudes. Twelve tests comprise the GATB, and its composition was determined by a series of factor analyses that were conducted on a larger number of tests. Unfortunately, the factor analyses were conducted on anywhere from 9 to 27 of the tests, and at no time were all of the tests that eventually made up the GATB used in the same factor analysis. To remediate this shortcoming, Watts and Everitt (1980) conducted a maximum-likelihood factor analysis on the correlation matrix as published in the GATB manual (U.S. Employment Service, 1970). Watts and Everitt failed to replicate the original factor structure, a result that is not surprising because the correlation matrix indicates that some tests correlate more highly with tests that are not in the same aptitude factor than with tests that are in the same aptitude factor. Hammond (1984) found that the GAB measured four higher order abilities rather than the nine factors specified in the manual. The GATB has become an extremely popular instrument in employment training and is reported to be used in 35 countries with 12 different language translations (Droege, 1984).
