Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy

  • Chapter

Abstract

Nodular thyroid disease is defined as the presence of single or multiple palpable or nonpalpable nodules within the thyroid gland. Thyroid nodules are common in clinical practice. Solitary palpable thyroid nodules are found in 4% to 7% of the adult population in North America (1–5). The prevalence of nodules increases linearly with age, in women, in iodine-deficient areas, and in populations exposed to ionizing radiation (2,3). Epidemiologic studies suggest that the annual incidence of thyroid nodules is 0.1% per year, which translates into approximately 275,000 new nodules in the United States, with an estimated 10% lifetime expectancy of a nodule developing (1). From a clinical standpoint, fewer than 5% of palpable nodules are malignant.
