Principles of Ultrasound Technique

  • Dara R. Treadwell

With current ultrasound technology, the image that appears on the ultrasound monitor represents some biological structure or structures obtained during the scanning procedure. Upon closer evaluation, however, one recognizes that this image is actually a display of dots or pixels in an arrangement of 256 gray shade levels from white to black, depicting the actual differences in tissue density of the internal body structures and displaying their anatomic relationship to one another. It is essential that one understand the principles of ultrasound propagation and echo generation as they relate to the resultant image if proper procedural and image interpretation skills are to be mastered. This chapter is designed as an introduction to the basic tenets of ultrasound physics affording foundational information for those who desire better knowledge of good ultrasound technique.
