PLL Frequency Synthesizers: Phase Noise Issues and Wide Band Loops

Abstract

New DVB standards impose very tight requirements for phase deviation in frontend tuners. Combining these requirements with higher integration levels are the challenges of current mixer-oscillator and PLL circuits, where behavioural models are essential to understand and guide the design work. Linear loop models and algorithms for filter calculation are developed to discuss stability and noise issues for the PLL synthesizer. The limitations of the models in the analysis of wide band loops are studied and theoretical limits are calculated. The accuracy of the models is verified in the implementation of testchips for multi-loop wide band PLLs.
