Abstract
Although use of transcatheter techniques 1,2 (Fig. 6–1), including a balloon catheter, 3 to perform valvotomies has been reported since the middle of this century, the first method to become widely accepted was the static balloon technique reported by Kan and associates4. Since the first edition of this text, balloon valvotomy has emerged as a mainstay of management in infants and children with stenosis of any heart valve. In the previous chapter, the technology of balloon catheters and their uses in vessel angioplasty were discussed. The same fundamental principles apply to the use of catheters for valvotomies within the heart.
