It is well known that newborns and infants respond poorly to the majority of vaccines. The poor response is related to immaturity of the immune system and/or to high susceptibility of young lymphocytes to tolerogenic signals. The understanding of the effect of neonatal genetic immunization requires a general review of information on the characteristics of the neonatal immune system.
