Interest in the workings of the circulation goes back to the ancient Greeks: Hippocrates and Galen both wrote about their findings in the heart and blood vessels. The pulmonary circulation was first described by an Arab physician, Ibn Al-Nafiis, in 1230, and no less a figure than Leonardo da Vinci had a keen interest in the hydrodynamic properties of blood. However, it was Harvey’s description of the circulation in 1628 that truly marked the beginnings of our modern understanding of the vasculature. Since then, great strides have been made in our understanding of vascular disease, leading to the development of endovascular methods for both diagnosis and treatment.1
