Abstract

Because so much of the early work on the neural crest was undertaken using amphibian embryos, I begin the series of chapters devoted to gnathostomes with a discussion of studies on the amphibian neural crest, providing evidence for the neural crest origin of pigment cells, various nerve cells, craniofacial mesenchyme, and craniofacial skeletal tissues.
