Abstract
We introduce the basic ideas associated with recursive partitioning in the context of a specific scientific question: Which pregnant women are most at risk of preterm deliveries? Particular emphasis is placed on the interaction between scientific judgment by investigators and the production of informative intermediate-stage computer output that facilitates the generation of the most sensible recursive partitioning trees.
