Overpressure and Lateral Stress in Sedimentary Formations

One of the substantial hazards occurring during the drilling process is caused by overpressure and/or horizontal stress. Both of these factors can damage and even destroy the well. Therefore an estimation of the probable formation pressure is of great importance. The estimations are especially important in exploration while drilling “wildcats”, when one does not have any information from neighboring wells. In this case, in order to get some assessment on the relevant parameters, we have used the results of basin modelling. 2-D models of the South Caspian Basin development have been constructed to estimate overpressure along two crossing profiles and passing across some structures which are the focus of interests of oil companies. At the same time 1-D modelling has been done with the purpose of contouring overpressure for different types of conditions in an area.
