Abstract

The challenges originated by the design of analog circuits in VLSI technologies, especially conceived for the design of digital circuits, were already pointed out in the introduction of this book [Gray87]:
  • The continuous increase in the performance of the digital circuitry requires a parallel evolution of the design techniques for interface analog circuits (basically signal conditioning circuitry and data converters), looking for larger resolution and operation frequency.

  • Furthermore, such performance should be obtained in technologies adverse for the analog designer with: (a) continuously decreasing supply voltages, which reduce the dynamic range and, taking into account that the MOS transistor threshold voltage is not equally scaled, practically invalidate certain very popular circuit techniques; and (b) small dimension devices, with poor linearity and matching properties and, frequently, deficiently modeled.

  • All this in a noisy environment due to the commutation of the digital circuits, which imposes severe restrictions on the physical design.
