Dyslipidemias, which include lipoprotein overproduction or deficiencies, are primary disorders of lipoprotein metabolism or secondary disorders induced by behavioral or other metabolic causes. Dyslipidemias are a common clinical problem, with approximately 25% of adults in the United States having total cholesterol (TChol) levels of 240 mg/dl or higher and nearly half having a TChol exceeding 200 mg/dl.1,2 Evidence from epidemiologic, pathologic, animal, genetic, and metabolic studies strongly supports a causal relation between serum lipoproteins and atherosclerosis.1,3
