Vulvovaginitis and Cervicitis

Abstract

Although modern medical practice has often relegated vaginal symptoms to the realm of the specialist gynecologist, the range of symptoms and diagnoses covered under this category with the concomitant preventive health and risk management issues is ideally suited to the expertise of the family physician. Excellence in the diagnosis and management of these diseases is the standard of care and can be achieved with a minimal investment of equipment, time (a 1-minute slide examination), and cost to the patient. Patients with vaginal complaints account for an estimated 10% of office visits each year1 and many more may be inaccurately diagnosed by phone. This chapter reviews the systematic approach to the evaluation and treatment of vaginal diseases as well as issues of particular interest to family physicians.
