Abstract
This chapter reviews the effects of chronic heavy alcohol consumption on psychiatric, neuropsychological, and psychological functioning. Most research reviewed herein was conducted with samples of “alcoholics,” defined variously by participation in inpatient or outpatient treatment, the presence of alcohol problems, or a diagnosis of alcohol dependence. We use the broad phrase “chronic heavy drinkers” to capture the heterogeneous nature of the samples studied in this research area.
