Behavioral Pharmacology of Nicotine

  • Chapter
Book cover Handbook of Substance Abuse

Abstract

This chapter focuses on nicotine reinforcement, highlighting basic research that demonstrates its reinforcing efficacy along with subjective mood and performance effects that may be responsible for reinforcement. Because our major area of interest is to improve understanding of nicotine reinforcement in humans, research on humans is emphasized. The environmental context surrounding nicotine intake can play a critical role in modulating its effects and thus its reinforcing value. Clearer understanding of nicotine reinforcement, including factors that modulate reinforcement, will lead to new insights about the conditions that promote initiation and maintenance of tobacco use and facilitate development of new behavioral and pharmacological interventions for smoking cessation.
