Abstract
In developed countries it is frequent to talk about millions of unemployed people. The growing stages of the economic cycles are nothing but temporary relieves. Unemployment has a structural component. Its main cause lies in the lack of balance between national economies and its companies regarding to the pressures to which they are submitted by the uncertain economic scene. This work analyzes the statistic evidence of part-time work in the European Community. The new atypical forms of work are a way to reduce the environmental complexity in companies. In this line there are two big challenges to solve: the support of the social protection system, and the adjustment of directive activities and functions to this new scene. The incidence of new technologies, the tertiary sector of the economy and the global competence take to a fragmentation of human recourses in the company, and force to planify, organize, compensate and lead in an unconvencional way. Part-time work is a strategical instrument used by executives to reduce environmental uncertainty.
