Perhaps the most important application of the AF of a signal is the radar/sonar problem of jointly estimating the range and radial velocity (Doppler shift) of a slowly fluctuating point target. The AF is important in this context since (i) the maximum-likelihood estimator for range and Doppler shift uses the cross-AF of the transmitted and received signals (or “pulses”), and (ii) the performance of this estimator is characterized by the AF of the transmitted pulse.
