Abstract
Taking the auto industry as a microcosm of global durable goods manufacturing for the sake of argument, this statement from Mercedes-Benz management is quite instructive. Ford is currently seen as the benchmark in North American manufacturing, but both Ford and industry experts say that only location and labour productivity puts them in this venerable position. Globally, Ford still trails Honda, Nissan, and Toyota.
