Abstract

Traditionally the main concern of a designer was performance and silicon area of the final product. Accordingly, research and development in the design automation community have focused on methods and tools which mainly optimize performance and/or area. Recently, power consumption has become an important design parameter. This shift in design emphasis is motivated by the increasingly important area of portable electronics and wireless communication. These systems are battery-operated and the goal is to keep the battery life long, while maintaining a reasonable weight. Since advanced battery technologies currently yield around 65 Wh/kilogram [Ped96], the only way to provide an acceptable operation time between recharges is to produce low power devices which can operate on the same batteries for a longer time.
