Abstract
We have answered the question, what can regulate populations, but we have not answered the question, what does regulate populations. We have seen that populations can be regulated by competitors, predators or parasitoids, diseases, or limited food supplies or cannibalism. This does not tell us, however, what is actually regulating any population in nature. Armed with theories describing potential regulating mechanisms, there are two different conceptual ways of trying to determine what regulates a population in nature.
