Abstract
This chapter considers the impacts of chronic physical illness on children and adolescents. As with many of the stressors discussed in this volume, chronic illness is heterogeneous in nature. Chronic illnesses vary in their age of onset, age at diagnosis, the functional impairment involved, prognosis of the disease, treatment demands and regimen, visibility, amount of pain involved, cyclic or constant nature of the symptoms, and predictability and pain of symptoms. This chapter focuses on the most prevalent chronic diseases experienced by children and adolescents, as well as diseases that are less common but present significant coping challenges. Physical disabilities are excluded.
